Dr. Rita Wutoh is currently the Director of the Henry Wise Student Health and Wellness Center at Bowie State University.  She has served in that position since November of 2008.

Prior to her arriving at Bowie State, she worked in private practice at Maryland Primary Care Physicians in Bowie, MD for three years.  Dr. Wutoh received her Board Certification in Internal Medicine in 1997.  In addition, Dr. Wutoh has served in a number of leadership roles including Executive Director of African Futures Forum, Inc. a nonprofit organization based in Washington D.C. dedicated to training youth in Africa and the Diaspora in health and education, Assistant Professor in Allied Health Sciences at Howard University, Fellow in International Health Policy at Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Fellow in Medical Informatics at Howard University.  Dr. Wutoh has been actively involved in Women's Health for 13 years.  She has received numerous grant awards for programming in tobacco cessation, women's wellness and sexual assault.

Dr. Wutoh received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and her medical degree from the University of Maryland.  In addition, she received her Master's in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Wutoh has been happily married to Dr. Anthony Wutoh, who is currently Associate Dean at the School of Pharmacy at Howard University, for 11 years and they are the proud parents of two daughters, Nadya and Niya.

Dr. Wutoh loves to spend time with her family, and travel to Africa.  Her hobbies are collecting glass beads and croquet.

MS. SIMPDY MERELAN, B.A., M.A. 

Department of Justice Grant/Sexual Assault Response and

Prevention Program Coordinator, Henry Wise Wellness Center

As Department of Justice Grant/Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Program Coordinator, Ms. Merelan coordinates sexual assault prevention efforts at Bowie State University.  She works closely with the following departments in order to ensure a collaborative response to on campus sexual violence issues: the Henry Wise Wellness Center; Judicial and Mediation Programs; Office of Student Life; Office of Residence Life and Campus Police/Public Safety.  She is also responsible for conducting sexual and dating violence outreach on campus. 

Prior to Bowie State University, she served in various student and academic affairs capacities.  She acted as an Academic Counselor for Mercer County Community College, Residence Director for Rutgers University - Douglass College Office of Residence Life, a Residential Director for the Upward Bound Program at University of Maryland-Baltimore County, a Part-time Lecturer for the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Rutgers University. Ms. Merelan also served as a volunteer domestic violence and sexual assault victim advocate for a non-profit organization that provides resources to those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault, Womanspace, Inc.

Simpdy Merelan received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers University - New Brunswick, New Jersey.  Her Bachelor of Arts degree is in Africana Studies and English and Master of Arts degree in Women's and Gender Studies.

MS. MADELIA HAYES, R.N., B.S.N.

Registered Nurse, Henry Wise Wellness Center

Madelia Hayes is a Registered Nurse and has both clinical and health education responsibilities at the Henry Wise Wellness Center.  Mrs. Hayes is a graduate of Howard University College of Nursing and has been a registered nurse for over 20 years.  She has worked in a variety of clinical and nonclinical settings as a registered nurse in the Washington-Maryland Metropolitan areas.  Madelia Hayes joined the staff of the Henry Wise Wellness Center at Bowie State University in September 2010.

Clinically, her focus and passion is on health education and health promotion.  Madelia Hayes has provided patient care and counseling to improve health and clinical outcomes at such nationally recognized institutions such Washington Hospital Center, Providence Hospital and Aetna U.S. Healthcare and has received recognition for superior performance.  She has provided hand hygiene teachings to elementary school children.  She has written several health articles in Crosstalk which is circulated to many adults.  She has researched topics and provided annual educational in-services to her colleagues at her formal places of employment.  Madelia Hayes reaches out to people of all ages regarding health education and health promotion.

Madelia Hayes is a native of Washington, D.C. and resides nearby.  In her spare time, she enjoys creative cooking and traveling.

MS. LI LIN CHIU, B.S., M.A., CRNP

Nurse Practitioner, Henry Wise Wellness Center

Ms. Li-Lin Chiu is currently the staff Nurse Practitioner for Henry Wise Wellness Center at Bowie State University. She has been in this position since November, 2005.

Prior to her arriving at Bowie State, she worked as a Registered Nurse at a number of health care organizations for 15 years, to include serving as OR/Med-Surg RN at one of the largest teaching hospitals, Tri-Service General Hospital, in Taiwan; Staff nurse at Hill Heaven Rehab Center in Salt lake City, UT; and Float Pool/Maternal Child Health RN/Charge Nurse at Johns Hopkins Medicine-Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD.

Ms. Chiu received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from University of Dubuque. She earned her Master's Degree in Patient Care Service Administration from University of Utah. In 2005, she graduated from the Post-Master Nurse Practitioner program in University of Maryland, Baltimore. She is a certified Women's Health and Adult Health Nurse Practitioner.

Ms. Chiu currently lives in Howard County, MD with her husband and two kids.
