Originally from Bloomfield, New Jersey, Carissa Smith is a senior communications major, student leader and entrepreneur. As a CIAA track athlete, she is a top finisher in both the 55m and 100m hurdles.
She has distinguished herself through her campus involvement. She is president of the Society of Sophisticated Ladies and a member of the BSU Student Alumni Association, Student Athlete Advisory Council, Student Government Association, Latino Student Association and National Council of Negro Women.
Recently, Smith interned for the U.S. Senate’s Public Affairs Department. She has also interned for Social Lifestyle Magazine, CBS Radio DC Public Affairs and WPGC-FM. Smith was a producer on the CW network affiliate for the show, "Being Fabulous Rocks," and her self-owned media production company Bliss of Riss Media, LLC. In 2014, Smith was crowned Miss Puerto Rico U.S. International.
Smith has vowed to impact her campus through the initiatives of self-love, self-confidence and self-respect. She believes that daily highlighting and uplifting is the most efficient method to showcase royalty to the women of the African-American community. Upon graduation she aspires to pursue her master’s degree in public affairs. She hopes to be a public affairs specialist in Washington, D.C. and a professor at Bowie State University.
