Name: Bekah Oester Age: 24 Hometown: Woodbridge, VA GPA: 3.955 Major/Concentration Communications/Print Journalism Personal Values I love to work! I am constantly trying to become the best I can at new things. Why did you choose to attend Bowie State University? I was looking for a school in the Prince George's/Anne Arundel County area, and after touring the campus, I loved the small feel to it. What professor/s has had the most impact on you and why? The Communications professors are all truly wonderful. They all come with experienced backgrounds that they are willing to share with you. They are all honest about the hard truths associated with the Communications field, and don't stick to just textbook knowledge. Rex Martin, Karima Haynes, and Dwight Ellis, to name a few, have all been especially helpful and influential. How has Bowie State helped to enhance your cultural experiences. I come from a diverse hometown and have tutored English to students from all backgrounds, but I learned of issues within the African/African-American communities that I didn't even know existed while at BSU. Next Steps I am getting married this year and will work to gain formal experience before eventually returning to graduate school. I have looked at various schools, but not yet selected one, and will continue to study Communications. What extracurricular activities and community service have made a significant and positive difference in your life? On Campus, I participated in SGA and both of the University's choirs which were positive eye-opening experiences. I also serve as Online Editor to the Spectrum, our campus newspaper. Off campus, I am very involved in my church, participating in the young adult ministries, volunteering time in the nursery, and planning trips to Walter Reed to visit and thank our troops.
