Bowie State Students Present Research at National STEM Conference

With Hands-on Experience, Students Prepare for STEM Careers

(BOWIE, Md.) – Eleven science and technology students, attending a national research conference last weekend, got to polish their presentation skills, while preparing for their future careers and graduate study.

The Emerging Researchers National Conference, which took place from March 2-4 in Washington, D.C., enabled students to present their research and attend workshops on how to succeed in careers in science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM). Dr. Alan Anderson, chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, was a presenter for a session designed to help science majors navigate a career in their field.

With notable increases in grant-funded projects over the years, Bowie State University continues to provide students with hands-on experience to work with faculty on real-world research. Programs like the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI), set for its third year in 2017, made it possible for some of the student presenters to take part in research and prepare for national conferences and scholarly journals. Others had the opportunity to travel abroad in a research team, led by faculty, as they conducted their research.
