(BOWIE, Md.) – Bowie State University is one of five higher education institutions named as a 2018 Excellence in Assessment designee, recognizing the university’s commitment to comprehensive assessment of student learning outcomes to drive internal improvement and advance student success.
The Excellence in Assessment (EIA) is the first national designation of its kind, spotlighting institutions that successfully integrate assessment practices across campus, providing evidence of student learning, and using assessment results to guide institutional decision-making and improve student performance. The five 2018 colleges and universities join a total of only 20 others with this designation, which was first awarded in 2016. Bowie State is the only four-year institution and historically black college and university to receive this designation.
“It is an honor for Bowie State University to be recognized as an Excellence in Assessment designee, which is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of our faculty and assessment coordinators,” said Dr. Becky Verzinski, Bowie State’s assistant vice president for assessment. “Bowie State University strives to improve student learning through assessment activities and data analysis that inform the teaching practice and ultimately help to support student success.”
Bowie State University collects and analyzes a broad range of assessment data, while working with internal and external stakeholders in an effort led by its Center for Academic Programs Assessment (CAPA). Faculty and students also participate in a variety of assessment activities, and the center provides faculty development resources online.
The national designation was created to acknowledge the important work colleges and universities are doing through comprehensive assessment activities and highlight them as best practices for other institutions. The EIA program’s sponsors are the Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA), led by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), in partnership with the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) and the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA).
“The Excellence in Assessment Designation is the first national, jointly sponsored designation to recognize institutions moving assessment of student learning from a compliance exercise to one of meaningful engagement. It highlights the use of evidence of student learning across the entirety of the university setting, involving a variety of stakeholders,” said Natasha Jankowski, NILOA Director.
The application process for the Excellence in Assessment designation includes a rigorous and systematic self-study. The designees demonstrate how aligned processes, building from classroom-based assessment, foster a coherent, collaborative approach to assessing student learning. Accredited, degree-granting institutions working to implement and sustain comprehensive use of assessment of student learning outcomes are eligible to receive the designations.
“Congratulations to each of the designees. By integrating assessment into the fabric of their institutions, they have demonstrated an on-going commitment to fostering student success both inside and outside of the classroom,” said AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella.
