Bowie State University to Graduate About 625 Students at Spring Commencement

USM Regent, Aerospace Expert to Address Graduates


A member of the Board of Regents for the University System of Maryland and aerospace expert will address approximately 625 Bowie State University graduates at the spring 2014 commencement.


Norman Augustine is an aerospace expert whose leadership in technology spans more than 40 years in government, the private sector, and higher education. His roles in government include acting secretary of the Army, under secretary of the Army, assistant secretary of the Army, and assistant director of defense research and engineering in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

He served for 16 years on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology under Republican and Democratic presidents and was a member of the Hart/Rudman Commission on National Security, which was charged with providing a comprehensive review of national security requirements in the 21st century.

In the private sector, he distinguished himself as a savvy businessman, holding executive-level positions at Martin Marietta Corporation and Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he retired as chairman and chief executive officer in 1997.
