Bowie State’s College of Education Extends 58-Year Accreditation

February 22, 2013

(Bowie, Md.) – February 22, 2013 – Bowie State University’s College of Education builds on a legacy of excellence with the recent extension of accreditation of its professional teacher programs by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The programs have maintained continuous accreditation since 1954.

The report of the NCATE review recognized that the initial and advanced teacher preparation programs meet the rigorous evaluation standards and cited no areas for improvement. The accreditation period lasts through spring 2019.

“The College of Education is among a very few premiere institutions across the nation that were granted full accreditation with no areas for improvement cited,” said College of Education Dean Traki Taylor-Webb. “The accreditation process reaffirms the college’s legacy of excellence in program quality and the effectiveness in building P-20 and community partnerships.”

“We are very proud of this renewal of the long-standing accreditation of the university’s education programs,” said Bowie State President Mickey L. Burnim.  “The College of Education’s continued NCATE accreditation is a direct reflection of the capability and dedication of our faculty and staff and their outstanding success preparing education professionals for schools at all levels.”

Since its founding in 1865, Bowie State has contributed significantly to the education of teachers throughout the state. The College of Education now offers teacher preparation degree programs, including Bachelor of Science degrees in early childhood/special education and in elementary education; Master of Arts degree in teaching; Master of Education degrees in reading, secondary education, special education, and elementary education; and a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership.
