(Bowie, Md.) A recent Bowie State University graduate is featured among the top 10 campus queens at historically black colleges and universities in the September issue of Ebony magazine.

Erica Johnson (‘14), who was the 2013-2014 Miss Bowie State University, is one of 10 students who received the highest number of votes among the final 56 qualifying campus queens in an online competition, sponsored by Ebony and Nielsen. More than 4 million votes were cast this spring, setting a record for Ebony. The magazine’s website featured profiles on the students, including their extracurricular activities and career goals, as well as a short video.

A Bowie, Md. resident, Johnson served in multiple campus leadership roles, including junior class president, freshman mentor, BSU Golden Girl cheerleader, and peer educator for the BSU Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug's Prevention Center. Outside of her service to the campus, she has spent nearly five years hosting a locally produced television show called “Teens N Focus,” a program encouraging young people to value education and make plans for the future.

Johnson plans to pursue a master’s degree in organizational communications at Bowie State, with the goal of becoming a media mogul and producer of TV programming that empowers youth.

The annual “HBCU Campus Queens” competition recognizes 10 young women from historically black colleges and universities for being role models of beauty and ambition on campus and in their communities, while highlighting the importance of education at HBCUs.
