(BOWIE, Md.) – Four Bowie State University students are returning to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) this spring to compete against teams from 47 other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the national quiz bowl tournament. The winning team takes home $75,000 in grant funding for their school.

The students and their coach, International Student Services Director Robert Batten, will travel to California for the competition, which runs from April 8-12 in Torrance, near Los Angeles. You can support the Bowie State team on social media by using #HCASC and tagging @bowiestate on Twitter or @bowiestateuniversity on Instagram.

This year, each member of the Bowie State team has represented the university in the national tournament at least once before:

  • Carroll Reed III (team captain), senior, computer science major
  • Ibukun Ayo-Durojaiye, senior, mathematics major
  • Jahlil Bennett, senior, government major
  • Kayla Rayford, senior, biology major

“With four seniors, we’re expecting to make a serious run at the championship,” said Batten.

The HCASC annually brings together 48 HBCU teams to compete in a fast-paced game played in a modified round robin format. The top two teams out of eight divisions advance to the “Sweet 16,” a single-elimination playoff. The final two teams that emerge from the playoffs compete for the grand prize of $75,000 for their schools, while teams eliminated in earlier rounds receive smaller grants.

The Bowie State team has advanced to the “Sweet 16” round for three years in a row. In 2016, returning team captain, Carroll Reed III, was recognized as an All-Star player for scoring the highest average point total in the team’s round robin division. The BSU team ended the 2016 tournament with $7,000 in grants.
