The search for Bowie State University’s 10th president is underway following the announced plan of President Mickey L. Burnim to retire effective June 30, 2017.
University System of Maryland Chancellor Robert L. Caret appointed a search and screening committee on Nov. 16, 2016, to begin a national search for qualified candidates to lead Bowie State into the future. The search committee is chaired by Linda Gooden, a member of the USM Board of Regents and a retired executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services..
To assure a foundation of inclusiveness, membership of the committee includes representatives from the Bowie State faculty, staff, students, alumni, volunteers and members of the business community. They will be assisted by the search consulting firm of Greenwood-Asher and Associates. To aid its work, the committee held an open forum on Dec. 5, 2016, to solicit input of the campus and interested members of the community on the characteristics and requirements that will be essential for the success of a new leader. Individuals are encouraged to send comments to the search committee at BSUSearch@usmd.edu.
With the goal of attracting the most highly qualified candidates for this position, a confidential search process will be employed. The committee will forward its recommendations of finalists to the chancellor and Board of Regents, and the board will make the final selection. The search committee is confident that the significant efforts to seek input at the beginning of the process and the broad representation of constituent groups on the committee will assure that all community voices are considered throughout the search process.
