Continuing Education & External Programs
Welcome to the Office of Continuing Education and External Programs. We are a relatively new Office formed at the University to provide support for the development, implementation and management of both non-credit academic program and off-campus academic activities.
We are always working to continue growing as a unit which provides unique services for our university community. This website serves as a chronicler of our services, programs and progress. We want to make sure that everyone has access to the work that we are doing. We invite you to return to this website from time to time to learn more about our office and to continue to be a part of our growing community. This office will develop opportunities for personal and professional activities designed to advance both an individual's personal and career goals as well as the expansion of Bowie State University beyond the physical boundaries of our home campus.
For Summer 2018, we are proud to announce additions to the Weekend College. We are adding to the programs being offered: Counseling Psychology and the Master of Arts in Teaching. The Masters in Human Resource Development will be competing its one year program in the Fall. Students are able to complete the entire masters program in one calendar year. We are in the process of recruiting for the new cohort.
Some of the activities Continuing Education and External Program is responsible for are:
Management of the Weekend College
This office works with various academic programs to offer the complete course schedule on the Weekends for the convenience of students who have very hectic and busy weekdays. The Weekend College will allow students to only meet their classes without the hassles of coming to campus after a long day of work. University services will be available to the students so that all needs and business requirements may be satisfied in a very convenient fashion. The number of programs being offered will increase over time as more students become aware of the possibility of completing their degree on the weekend.
Management of the Non-Degree enrollment process
This office works with individuals who would like to enroll into courses for continued certification or personal or career advancement without the entry into a degree program. We process the non-degree application, work with you on the initial course enrollment and make ensure that you have the tools you will need to reach your educational and professional goals.
Management of the BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment program
Bowie State University and the Prince Georges County Public School (PGCPS) system have entered into an agreement to allow PGCPS students in their junior and senior years to enroll in college courses. Some of the courses available to students in the program can serve to satisfy their high school graduation requirements. PGCPS will pay for the tuition of the students in the program. Students who are in the Free and Reduced Meals (FARM) program will also have their fees and tuition paid for by PGCPS.
Manage the expansion of Bowie State University to off-campus locations
This office works closely with academic departments that wish to offer their programs in off-campus locations. We work with the departments in identifying the sites for offering programs, coordinate the logistics for facilities and assist in identifying the targeted pool of potential student. Once the off-campus program has become established the Office coordinates the site logistics and requirements.
Manage both the Winter term and the Summer School sessions
This office works with the academic departments to develop and post the course schedule for both terms. We publicize the course offerings and work with the administration and faculty to insure a smooth and peaceful winter and summer.
Manage the development of non-credit courses and programs
The office will lead the university towards the development of a continuing education curriculum that can provide non-credit courses and programs to assist in the professional develop needs of our extended community.
Manage the university's experiential program
The Portfolio program offers students the opportunity to utilize their prior work experiences to satisfy the requirements of coursework. The program assists in accelerated time to degree by allowing students the option of not sitting through a class if they can document the manner in which their work experiences satisfy the objectives and outcomes of the class.
Manage the university’s service to veterans and military personnel
The Military Resource Center (MRC): The Point of Contact, finds its home in the Continuing Education Office. The MRC is a location for or students who have served or are currently serving in the military to locate answers and solutions to issues, concerns and problems or a location to network and fellowship with colleagues and peers.
The MRC serves as the point of contact for assistance in resolving issues and concerns associated with matriculating at BSU. It is also home of the Student Veterans Association (SVA).
These are a few of the key areas in which this office is involved. We are looking forward to continued growth as an essential part of the Bowie State University community.
