Established in 1865, Bowie State University is the oldest historically Black institution of higher learning in Maryland and one of the oldest in the nation. Bowie State University (BSU) offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, and serves a diverse student population.

BSU provides educational opportunities to enable students to function in a highly technological and interdependent world by placing particular emphasis on excellence in teaching. A diverse group of individuals, BSU faculty come from some of the most prestigious institutions in the world and many have distinguished themselves through scholarship, research, and service.


Shady Grove, Maryland

In fall 2000, The University System of Maryland (USM) introduced a new concept in advanced higher education. This was the beginning of the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). Since its inception in 2000, USG has been transformed from a location for part-time evening instruction into a vibrant center serving more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Southern Maryland Higher Education Center was established by the State of Maryland in 1994 to provide a regional facility with state of the art technology to serve the university and professional training needs of the Southern Maryland region.  Today, the Center hosts over 90 master's, doctorates and upper division undergraduate degree programs and in the fields of engineering (37 programs); education (34 programs); management; information technology; procurement and acquisitions; business administration; technical management; communications; human resources management; financial administration; nursing and social welfare.
