Summer Institute: CLT

The College of Education’s Department of Teaching, Learning and Professional Development (TLPD) is responding to the critical needs of teacher shortages in the State of Maryland by offering a greater variety of unconventional programs that lead to educator licensure/certification. Other programs are for highly qualified/properly licensed, and/or fully credentialed educators and counselors. These programs can assist teachers and counselors with rejuvenating their passion for teaching and advancing their careers.

Paraprofessionals and individuals interested in becoming educators can complete a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education or a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood/Special Education, Elementary Education, and Sports Management, to prepare for master’s coursework and Standard Professional Licensure.

Continuing Education Courses toward Certification (CECC) for CLT (Conditional License Teachers)

(Note: For State of Maryland Conditional Certificate Educators: valid for two years and only issued to an applicant in a local school system or publicly funded nonpublic school who does not meet all professional certification requirements)

The CECC were designed to prepare conditional certificated educators in the State of Maryland with the requirements to become endorsed with a professional eligibility certificate. These courses will be offered during Bowie State University’s Summer Institute: CLT. In addition, courses will be offered towards certification for counselors. These courses are current approved courses offered through TLPD and the Department of Counseling traditional programs.

PRAXIS Core for Educator Licensure

CECC students are required to pass the Praxis Core and Praxis in their content area. A partnership between Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and BSU’s College of Education provides PRAXIS Core assistance for conditional license teachers employed with PGCPS on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week from 4:30pm – 7:30pm in BSU’s James E. Proctor Building, Room 252 and Room 254. It is highly recommended that students enrolled in the PRAXIS Core Sessions or Saturday Bootcamp sessions when they are offered. Students should take the exam(s) prior to attending the Summer Institute.

CECC students begin their coursework in the June 17, 2019 – August 9, 2019 attending an intensive summer term of two-six weeks, taking one course each week from 8:00am – 5:00pm. Academic support is available in their professional seminars. CECC students attend workshops/conferences and participate in other academic activities. Upon arrival back to their schools, they are rejuvenated and empowered with the necessary tools to improve their classrooms and school districts. In addition, CECC can continue in the College of Education’s Graduate Degree Programs: Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Education in Elementary Education (M.Ed.), Master of Education in Secondary Education Program (M.Ed.), Master of Education in Reading (M.Ed.) and Master of Education in Special Education (M.Ed.).
