International Graduate Admissions

Admission Requirements

International students must meet the admission requirements as a graduate applicant and the immigration requirements for an F-1 visa. This must all be cleared by the International Student Advisor before an I-20 will be mailed.

Deadlines

Fall semester – May 1 (completion of documents by June 1)
Spring semester – November 1 (completion of documents by December 1)

Application Process

In addition to meeting the graduate admissions requirements, international applicants must take the following steps:

  1. Complete the online application, with appropriate fee in U.S. dollars ($40 for master’s degree programs, $50 for the doctoral programs).
  2. Meet the immigration requirements for an F-1 visa. Applicants must be cleared by the International Student Advisor before an I-20 will be mailed.
  3. Submit official transcript(s).
    • Foreign Transcripts: If the official transcript is in a language other than English, the applicant must submit a certified English translation of the transcript. All international applicants must also submit an evaluation of their foreign transcripts showing the U.S. equivalent of any coursework taken outside of the United States. The University accepts evaluations from the following organizations:
    • World Education Services
    • Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
    • TOEFL: If the applicant's native language is not English, they must provide evidence of English language proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. An official record of the TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 (213 for the computer-based test) and Test of Written English (TWE) with a minimum score of 4.0 must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to Bowie State University. The scores must be less than two years old. TOEFL scores must be submitted by all international students, except the following:
      • Non-native speakers of English who have graduated or transferred from secondary and postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries, provided they have spent a minimum of two years there, have successfully completed 18 credits, and the language of instruction was English; or
      • Students from countries where English is the language of instruction in the educational system.
  4. Submit applicable test scores for the program of interest.
    • Early provisions should be made by the applicant for taking the test so that the official test results may be sent to Bowie State University on or before the admission deadlines.
  5. Submit sufficient documentary evidence that the applicant will be financially supported throughout his/her studies in the United States. All such documentary evidence must be notarized and sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions. The following are acceptable sources and required documentation of funds:
    • Personal: Current letter from applicant verifying the amount of applicant's funds in U.S. dollars and the date the bank account was opened. The letter must be on official bank letterhead and addressed to Bowie State University.
    • Parent, spouse, or sponsor in the United States:
      • A notarized Affidavit of Support I-134 formand;
      • A letter from the parent's, spouse's, or sponsor's bank, verifying the amount of applicant's funds in U.S. dollars and the date the bank account was opened. The letter must be on official bank letterhead and addressed to Bowie State University. The Financial Guarantee must be co-signed by an authorized bank or representative of a recognized sponsoring agency. All bank statements must be dated within the last six months. The Affidavit of Support cannot be used in lieu of a bank statement.
    • Parent, spouse, or sponsor outside the United States:
      • A notarized letter addressed to Bowie State University from the individual(s) in English indicating the relationship and the amount of money that will be made available in U.S. dollars and;
      • A letter from the parent's, spouse's, or sponsor's bank, verifying the amount of applicant's funds in U.S. dollars and the date the bank account was opened. The letter must be on official bank letterhead and addressed to Bowie State University. The Financial Guarantee must be co-signed by an authorized bank or representative of a recognized sponsoring agency. All bank statements must be dated within the last six months. The Affidavit of Support cannot be used in lieu of a bank statement.
    • Government, employer, or international organization:
      • An official letter from the sponsor addressed to Bowie State University and signed by an authorized representative of the agency or organization. The letter must indicate the amount of the award in U.S. dollars and must detail the terms of the award.
