Who is considered a transfer student?

A transfer student is anyone who has graduated from high school and completed at least one college course since high school graduation.

When should I apply?

The Transfer Priority Application Deadline is June 1 for fall admission and December 15 for spring admission. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by the priority deadline, as they will receive best consideration for admission to the university and merit-based scholarships. What happens if my application is incomplete by the priority application deadline?

If you are unable to complete your application by the priority deadline, you are strongly encouraged to submit a completed application and all required materials. Applications completed after the priority application deadline will only be reviewed on a rolling, space-available basis.

Do I need to submit high school information and standardized test scores?

Transfer applicants with less than 24 transferable college credits at the time of application are required to submit an official high school transcript and standardized tests (SAT or ACT) scores.

Can I transfer even if I am not yet sure about what major to select?

Yes. Students still unsure about a major can transfer as an undeclared major.

How do I register for classes?

During New Student Transfer Orientation, you will learn about campus resources, meet with an advisor, and register for your classes.

How many credits and what GPA do I need to be admitted?

Transfer applicant must have 24 transferable credits a combined minimum GPA of 2.00 for admission consideration. If an applicant has attended more than one institution, BSU makes the decision based on your combined GPA. Additionally, while one may be admissible to BSU, the GPA criteria for admission to a specific major may vary.

Does BSU accept credits from my college/university?

Bowie State University accepts transfer credit from any regionally accredited institution. BSU will accept evaluations of foreign institutional credits from current members of the NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) or WES (World Education Services). Applicants must contact one of the international credit evaluation agencies to request an evaluation of your foreign credits be sent to Bowie State University.

What is the maximum number of transfer credits BSU will accept?

BSU accept a maximum of 65 credits from a regionally accredited community college. Applicants transferring from a regionally accredited four-year institution may transfer up to 90 credits. Applicants that have received credits both a community college and a four-year institution may transfer up to 90 credits.

When will I receive my credit evaluation to see which credits will transfer?

An evaluation of courses taken at other institutions is completed after admission to BSU. Access to transfer evaluations, which outline which credits will transfer to BSU, is provided during New Student Orientation. Final determination of how credits will be applied toward a degree must be obtained from your academic advisor.

Will my GPA transfer?

Your GPA from your previous school(s) will not transfer; however, it is used to determine your eligibility for admission. You must be in good academic standing to be accepted into the university.

Will BSU accept my military credit?

BSU awards college credit for basic military training upon presentation of a valid Record of Military Service (DD Form 214). All other eligible credits must be recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE), who recommends appropriate credit hours to be awarded. BSU also accepts Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript Service (AARTS), Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART), Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), Coast Guard Transcript, et al. To earn BSU credit, request your military transcripts at GoArmyEd.

Does BSU accept Advanced Placement (AP) credit?

Yes. You should have original copies of your AP scores forwarded to BSU. Contact ETS in Princeton, NJ at (609) 771-7300 for more information.

Are there merit-based scholarships available for transfer students?

There are six merit-based scholarships available for transfer students: Don S. Goodloe, 21st Century, Achievement, Heritage, Phi Theta Kappa, and Associate’s Degree. Scholarships are renewable as funds are available. Awards are not awarded retroactively. Learn more about eligibility requirements.
