Darren SwainMaryland Delegate Darren Swain, assistant vice president for alumni relations, was appointed chair of the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) initiative for the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. The STEAM Initiative helps prepare students to become competitive for career opportunities. As chair, Swain will help champion members to pursue legislative action and initiatives that will establish Maryland as a global leader in STEAM fields.

Mariann HawkenMariann Hawkens, instructional technology, was named a member of the first class of Blackboard MVPs, a group of professionals with extensive knowledge about the online teaching tool. As MVPs, they will share their ideas with other users worldwide through social media, discussion forums, webinar presentations, and events. Two new classes of Blackboard MVPs will be appointed annually based on self and peer nominations.

Sarah HainesworthSenior communications major Sarah Hainesworth wrote an article on an inmate work program that recently appeared in The Baltimore Sun,Maryland’s largest newspaper with a daily circulation of 177,000. Hainesworth is an intern on the newspaper’s highly competitive metropolitan desk.

Deidre-MathisDeidre Mathis, a 2013 master’s of organizational communications graduate, is sharing her insights and experiences highlighting importance of working, studying and traveling abroad with college students as a guest speaker on campuses around Maryland as part of International Education Week, the third week in November. A travel blogger, Mathis has visited more than 20 countries, including India through a BSU study abroad and cultural exchange program. Her schedule is:
