Students awarded CIAA scholarships

By Segrid Archield, BSU Senior

Three Bowie State University students were awarded $1,000 scholarships through the Food Lion Essay Contest, as part of last week’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball tournament.

The scholarship recipients are:

  • Vanessa Gyamfi, a sophomore majoring in visual communication and digital media arts
  • Taylor Beckett, a junior majoring in business administration
  • Kristen Williams, who is pursuing a master of public administration degree

The students were among 15 first-place winners. Four additional grand-prize winners were awarded $5,000, two All-Session tournament tickets, two nights of hotel accommodations and $500 for travel expenses. The grand-prize winners were also recognized at halftime during the men’s championship game.

Sponsored by Food Lion, Coca-Cola and the CIAA conference, the contest asked each contestant to submit a 500- to 700-word essay answering the question, “How does my CIAA school impact my community?” The essays were reviewed by judges from Dream Builders Communications, an international training, coaching, public speaking, and organizational development firm.
