Dr. Frederick Mills, professor of philosophy, wrote an article about the declaration of a union between the Organization of American States and Venezuela, which appeared in the Eurasia Review Journal. He also co-authored an article published by the Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA), giving insight on political unrest in El Salvador. Dr. Mills is a senior research fellow at COHA. Thirteen students were awarded BSU National Alumni Association spring 2014 scholarships ranging from $400 - $700. The scholarship recipients are: freshman computer science major Derrick Addo; junior psychology major David Alston; sophomore business administration and communications major Brooke Archer-Simpson; senior bioinformatics majors Dominic Buckner; freshman business administration major Akevia Darden; senior business administration major Alessandra Flores; freshman criminal justice major James Frieson; junior communications major Vivian Gunn; sophomore nursing major Mary Koroma; sophomore visual communications and digital media arts major Jadeysa Lake; junior early childhood/special education major Channae Manning; senior child and adolescent studies major Aaron Smith; and junior criminal justice major Kayla Watson. As part of the scholarship requirements, the students must volunteer 20 hours with the Office of Alumni Relations.

The music of Marlee in the Mixx, a band comprised of BSU students and alumni, was featured in a TV One commercial as part of that cable network’s Black History Month promotion. The BSU members are junior fine arts major Miciah “Ki” Duncan (lead guitar), senior communications major Austin Johnson (singer/songwriter), sophomore fine arts major Arami “Coles” Coleman (keyboard), freshman biology major Robert Lowe (bass) and 2013 alumnus Bradley “Foots” McDonald (drums).
