Bowie State University will break ground in offering a new academic minor program in hip-hop studies and visual culture – the first such program in Maryland and possibly only the second in the nation.

BSU Associate Professor Robert Birt will join a panel of activists and community leaders on Friday, March 18 for a discussion to explore experiences, representation and history of racial inequality and protest at Ebenezer AME Church in Baltimore. Dr. Birt will share his experience as a child during the 1968 riots in Baltimore and how it has influenced his work as a historian. Funded by a grant from the Maryland Humanities Council, the event is hosted by the National Council on Public History and the Society for History in the Federal Government.

The BSU Lady Bulldogs bowling team captured their fourth straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division title after winning a CIAA round-up event last weekend. Freshman Diamond Carter led Bowie State with the highest average score of 170.56 after knocking down a total of 1,535 pins. The team will defend their CIAA Championship title March 18-20 at the 2016 CIAA Women’s Bowling Championship in Chesapeake Beach, Va.

BSU sophomores Chelsea Harris and Vidal Adams were named 2015-2016 NCAA Division II All-Region honorees for their outstanding performance during the indoor track & field season. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognizes the top five individuals in each event and the top three relay teams from each region.
