Refund of Student Fees & Commencement Update

Bowie State University continues to actively monitor the global outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Please continue to monitor the University’s Coronavirus Updates webpage for updated information or send us an email at COVID19@bowiestate.edu

Bowie State University currently remains open under system-wide telework guidance, and classes have transitioned to distance learning for the remainder of the semester. Therefore, we will issue prorated refunds for housing, dining and parking charges, as well as the athletics fee, consistent with the uniform guidance provided by University System of Maryland Chancellor Dr. Jay Perman.

Refund Process

The Bursar’s Office has already begun work to calculate each student’s refund and will post to individual student accounts as soon as possible.  We ask for your patience as we work to issue the billing adjustments in a fair and timely manner.  It is our goal to issue all applicable refunds within seven to ten business days from Friday, April 3, 2020. Please understand that processing may take longer than normal due to modified university operations.

The average refund will be approximately 49% of fees. The prorated refunds reflect the transition to distance learning on March 23. The calculation is based on 56 out of 115 term days taking place during distance learning.

Once applied, the refund and adjustments will be visible on your student account and will be labeled COVID-19.  Any outstanding charges on the student’s account will be deducted from this refund amount before it is sent to the State of Maryland for processing. The state will process the refunds and send them to Bowie State’s disbursement partner Bank Mobile. Bank Mobile will issue refunds in accordance with each student's preselected refund preference.

If you have not signed up for a Bank Mobile, please email sa@bowiestate.edu so that a personal code may be emailed to you.  Once you receive your personal code via email, go to RefundSelection.com to select your refund preference.  Bank Mobile gives students two options to receive their refund: Direct Deposit to an Existing Account or Deposit to a Bank Mobile Vibe Checking Account.  If you select the BankMobile Vibe account as your refund choice, you will receive a temporary virtual Debit Master Card to use until your physical card arrives in the mail.

Bowie State University remains steadfast in supporting our academic mission and in keeping all students on track to maintain progress toward the completion of their degrees. For refund-related information not covered on the Student Refunds page, contact the University’s Office of Student Accounts at sa@bowiestate.edu.

Commencement Update

The university is moving forward in a collaborative process with the shared governance groups to explore options for celebrating our spring graduates since the planned in-person ceremony had to be cancelled. A planning committee including representatives from Student Government Association, Graduate Student Association, Faculty Senate and Staff Council and other key individuals is being convened and led by Ms. Nancy Martin of Conference Services.

SGA and GSA are already moving forward to launch surveys of the student body to get broad input into the discussion. We look forward to getting a recommendation from this committee in the near future.
