Become a Mentor

The Bowie State University Male Initiative is a mentoring program that needs the volunteer assistance of administrators, faculty, and staff to mentor currently enrolled male students at the University.  Mentors will work with their protégées to help them achieve academic excellence and social integration on campus, as well as increase retention and fulfill their educational and professional goals. We hope that you will complete the Mentor Registration Form to volunteer to become a mentor and to assist this very important initiative.

Mentor's Role & Expectations:

  • Assist the protégée in acclimating to the University environment
  • Serve as a resource that the protégée can talk to, confide in, and receive sound advice
  • Encourage the protégée and help him set and work toward academic and professional goals

Mentor's Responsibilities & Activities

  • Commit to an academic year
  • Contact potential protégées
  • Call or email protégées to confirm appointments
  • Communicate with the protégée at least once a month (with at least three face-to-face meetings during the school year)
  • Share expertise and personal experiences
  • Attend at least two BSU events per semester with the protégée
  • Participate in the yearly Mentor Retreat
  • Attend the yearly Bowie State University Male Initiative Fall Gathering
  • Provide constructive feedback
