Convocations

Bowie State University traditionally holds two convocations annually as the official opening of the academic year to welcome new students in September and the launch of the university's celebration of Black History Month in February.

Fall Freshman Matriculation Convocation

The Fall Freshman Matriculation Convocation celebrates new students' enrollment at Bowie State University and the start of their journey to graduation. Members of the new class of freshman students are required to attend.

Spring Black History Month Convocation

This ceremony officially kicks off the spring semester and the campus-wide celebration of the Black History Month.

Founders' Day

This annual ceremony celebrates the founding of the university in 1865 and honors the collection of men who sought to provide for the education of the newly emancipated Maryland citizens. The program honors the achievement of generations or students and recognizes those currently enrolled who earned Dean’s List status with a GPA of at least 3.5 in the previous semester. Retirees who dedicated years of service to the institution are also recognized during this ceremony.
