Bowie State University Improves Ranking Among Top 20 HBCUs

U.S. News 2024 Best Colleges List Ranks BSU at 16 Among HBCUs

(BOWIE, Md.) – The U.S. News and World Report 2024 Best Colleges ranking released today ranked Bowie State University at 16 among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, an improvement of two places from last year.  This places Bowie State among the Top 10 public HBCUs.

The publication ranked 77 HBCUs using nearly all the same indicators as it does for its regional universities list, but with slightly different weights, including graduation and first-year student retention rates, student excellence and faculty resources. It also assesses the results of a separate peer survey for HBCU administrators.

Bowie State also ranked 46 among the top public schools in the Regional Universities (north) category and was recognized among the most innovative schools (#22) and as a top performer for social mobility (#47) in the region.  The innovation ranking considers how universities are making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology, or facilities. The social mobility honor highlights Bowie State’s success in graduating students who receive federally funded Pell Grants, typically from households earning less than $50,000 annually.

The excellence of Bowie State’s undergraduate academic programs was recognized in this year’s rankings. The undergraduate program in teaching stood out at #26 among schools in the Regional Universities (north).  Programs in computer science and psychology were also recognized.
