Legal Affairs

The General Counsel coordinates the university’s legal affairs and functions as the primary point of contact for legal inquiries, requests for public information under the Maryland Public Information Act, subpoenas, summonses, and other forms of legal process.

The General Counsel represents Bowie State University (BSU) and works only on university-related matters. The General Counsel’s Office cannot provide legal advice or representation to individual members of the university community regarding personal matters unrelated to their employment at BSU. The General Counsel works closely with the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Maryland who represents all state universities in litigation and other matters.

University Policies and Procedures

The General Counsel maintains institutional policies. It is the responsibility of the management of each administrative division to ensure that all internal operating procedures are maintained in writing. For more information on policy approval and development, please see the Policy on Approval of Policies and Procedures.

Subpoenas and other Legal Process

Bowie State University employees who receive a court order or subpoena, or are contacted by an attorney in connection with university business, should contact the General Counsel’s Office immediately. A university attorney will determine the necessary response to such legal queries.
