V - 7.00 - Policy on Students Who are Called to Active Military Duty During a National or International Crisis or Conflict


I. Purpose

This Policy is designed to govern students who are called to active military duty during a national or international crisis or conflict.

II. Applicability

A. Scope

This Policy applies to undergraduate and graduate full-time and part-time students enrolled at Bowie State University.

B. Eligibility

This Policy applies to all students identified in II A above who must interrupt their studies because they are required to report for military duty during a national or international crisis. Such students already will have invested resources in the payment of tuition, mandatory and auxiliary fees, and, in some instances, room and board.

C. Responsibility

The Provost via the Associate Provost, the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment, and the School Deans, will ensure the appropriate documentation and the efficient and effective implementation of this policy.

III. Guidelines and Process

A. This Policy will be implemented so as to maximize the University's support of its students identified in II A and B, above.

B. This Policy will be implemented with the objective of refunding the maximum amount to the student identified in II A and B, above, in accord with the University's exemption procedures.

C. This Policy will be implemented with the greatest effort, including advice as to the best course of action, to accommodate the student identified in II A and B who desires to interrupt his/her course of study and opts to receive an incomplete in course (s).

D. If a student identified in II A and B, above desires to seek approval of an "interruption of his/her studies," he/she should present his/her request and documentation of his/her military recall to the Dean of the School that houses his/her major. (Students who have not declared a major should petition the Director of the Center for Student Success and Retention.)

E. For students granted an interruption of their studies (incompletes for the given semester), the Dean shall submit a copy of the written agreement to the appropriate Department Chair, Office of the Provost, Registrar, and Director of Student Accounts

F. If the student identified in II A and B, above desires to completely withdraw from the University, he/she should present his request for withdrawal and documentation of his/her military recall to the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management or his/her designee.

G. The Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management/his/her designee will present an Administrative Withdrawal for the student to the Associate Provost for Educational Affairs.

H. Upon approval, the Administrative Withdrawal will be routed to the appropriate offices in keeping with the administrative withdrawal policy.
