Statement from the President on Reclaiming our Community
The Bowie State University community is saddened today by the reports of shots fired on the campus last night. After a week of joyous, safe Homecoming celebrations, individuals intent on perpetrating acts of violence shattered the peaceful activities which are the tradition here at BSU. Sadly, two persons were injured. Police confirm that the individuals were not Bowie State or Morgan State students. Police are actively investigating the incident, and report that there are no further threats to the campus or community.
It is exceedingly disturbing that gun violence is increasingly finding its way into the safe havens of our university campuses. While the significant increase of police and security officers throughout the Bowie State campus this weekend enabled a quick response to the scene, the fact that individuals brazenly discharged a weapon is disheartening.
I know that many of our students have been impacted by this incident. University counselors are on campus today in the Student Center Ballroom to meet with any students who want to speak with someone for support. Additional counseling sessions will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ballroom. Your safety and well-being are our utmost priority. To allow the campus time processes and heal from this incident, classes will be canceled on Monday, Oct. 9. I have scheduled a Community Conversation at 2 p.m. Monday in the Student Center Ballroom to provide opportunity to listen and share ae we begin to reclaim our community that is Bowie State. A virtual option will be provided. We invite our parent and families to join us this conversation.
