(BOWIE, Md.) – The University System of Maryland (USM) announced earlier this month that Tanya Jones, executive assistant and operations manager for President Aminta Breaux, has been recognized as a recipient of the USM Board of Regents Staff Award for her extraordinary public service to the university and the greater community. The award is the highest honor presented by the Regents to exemplary staff members.

“I am both appreciative and humbled to have been selected by the Board of Regents to receive this award,” said Jones, who has been at BSU for nine years. “It means a lot to me to see our students get a quality education. Dr. Breaux is dedicated to excellence, students succeeding, and the university growing so I want to do whatever I can in my role to help her attain those goals,” she said.

Jones has served as chair of the Administration & Finance Strategic Planning Group, vice chair of the BSU Staff Council, chair of the BSU Women’s Forum and chair of the USM Women’s Forum. She is known as a people person for her ability to bring staff, faculty, students, alumni and supporters of the university together to uplift Bowie State and the USM, especially to support women throughout the system.

“I’ve watched the university blossom into an institution to be reckoned with based on the number of new opportunities on this campus available to students and the community,” said Jones. “We’re on the move and I am dedicated to letting people know that receiving a top notch education from an HBCU is a reality at Bowie State,” she said

Jay A. Perman, chancellor of the USM and Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden will acknowledge the award to Jones at the full board meeting on September 16. Jones will receive a $2,000 prize provided by Bowie State and the USM Foundation.

Before joining Bowie State, Jones was an assistant director of special projects and operations at the American Council on Education.
