Selection Criteria & Application

We are thrilled that you are interested in the China Study Abroad Scholarship. You are positioning yourself to embark on an experience that will change your outlook on life and affect the choices you make for your future.

Who Can Apply?

As per the scholarship agreement with the Chinese government, only US citizens are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate student at BSU.  Unfortunately, all the courses offered in China with this particular scholarship are undergraduate courses and therefore, only undergraduates are eligible for this program.

You must have completed a minimum of 12 credits (one semester) at BSU at the time of application.  This also applies to freshmen and transfer students.  Preference will be given to applicants who have completed at least 24 college credits, 12 of which must have been at BSU.  However, if you’ve completed between 12-24 credits, we will still consider your application.

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (however, students may apply if their GPA is above 2.5 and will be considered based on the strength of the overall application pool).

Students must demonstrate the ability to lead a stable, responsible, and healthy life abroad as a representative of Bowie State University, HBCUs, and of the United States.

Student Conduct

Disciplinary or Housing Violations

The Office of International Programs consults with the Office of Student Affairs’ Judicial Affairs Coordinator at Bowie State University to determine whether applicants have committed any conduct or housing violations and to ascertain the circumstances surrounding any such violations. In some cases, students will be asked to submit a personal statement and meet with study abroad representatives to discuss the incident(s) and implications for study abroad. This information will be used in determining suitability for study abroad and may also be shared with the study abroad program. Students who commit conduct or housing violations after they are approved but before they study abroad may not be permitted to study abroad.

Disciplinary Probation

Students who will be on disciplinary probation during the term(s) in which they are scheduled to study abroad are not eligible to academic and non-academic study abroad at Bowie State University.

Application

  1. Fill out the application form on Blackboard -  Students Ecosystem Funding Opportunities 2019
  2. In the application form, include an essay of no more than 500 words (1 page, single-spaced) that explains your expectations for the program and why you want to study abroad in China.
  3. Unofficial Transcript (e-copy)
  4. Resume (optional)
  5. Upload your application and related documents on Blackboard - Students Ecosystem Funding Opportunities FY2019
  6. One mandatory letter of recommendation which must be from a BSU professor who is familiar with you and your academic work as well as your suitability for a study abroad program.  Although not required, to strengthen your overall application, we would prefer a second recommendation letter which can be from anyone who can speak to your academic and personal strengths.  It is the sole responsibility of the student to make sure the recommendation letter/s is/are received by the deadline.  You can have your recommender email your letter to studyabroad@bowiestate.edu
  7. All students who submit a complete application by the deadline will be scheduled for a 30-minute, in-person interview for the possibility of a scholarship.  This is a competitive scholarship and an interview in no way guarantees acceptance to the program.  We always receive far more applications than the number of available scholarships so please come prepared for your interview.  A student's full application packet (GPA, essay, recommendation letter/s, in-person interview, and other factors) will be thoroughly examined by the committee before selections are made.
  8. There will be two 1-hour informational sessions. If you are unable to attend a session or have any questions regarding the program or application process, please contact:
