Guest Lecture: 'Conversion Therapy and Christian Fundamentalism: Understanding Essentialist Notions of Sexuality and Gender'

Dr. Horacio Sierra's ENGL 254: Queer Cultural Studies class will host Lucas Wilson, a lecturer at the University of Toronto, to discuss gay "conversion" therapy within the framework of Christian fundamentalism. As part of the Religious Exemption Accountability Act, Wilson is one of 33 plaintiffs suing the U.S. Department of Education to determine whether religious colleges and universities should receive federal funds while actively discriminating against their LGBTQ students. Wilson will discuss his experience attending Liberty University and its gay "conversion" therpay and the kind of harm such programs have on members of the LGBTQ community. Wilson's work has been published in The Advocate, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Queerty.
