Colorism in Black America: Assessing your Internalized Oppression

The Office of Multicultural Programs and Services will host an intentional conversation on Colorism in Black America with Howard University Social Justice Fellow Dr. Anjerrika Bean. Colorism is a practice of discrimination by which those with lighter skin are treated more favorably than those with darker skin. Colorism often happens within the same race. Colorism can be most pronounced among people of color when internalized oppression undercuts solidarity.

Colorism is a product of racism and white supremacy in the United States. At the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Describe and define colorism,
2. Identify scientific tools to assess colorism bias, and
3. Analyze strategies to implement to deconstruct colorism microaggressions.
