Dr. James Hyman is an Assistant Professor of Public Administration at Bowie State University. He is also the creator of the BSU Philanthropy Initiative that is planning to launch a new graduate degree Program (Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Management) in the BSU College of Business in the Fall of 2024. In Spring of 2022, Dr. Hyman launched the BSU Philanthropy Fellowship Program that placed 3 MPA students in full-time, paid, C-suite Fellowships in several foundations. The Fellowship will more than triple its size (to 9 students in 7 foundations) in its second year.

Dr. Hyman is a social scientist with extensive experience grappling with issues of persistent poverty and urban policy in areas such as: youth, community and economic development; community building; and prisoner reentry. He has had experience: in philanthropy – as President of the Freddie Mac Foundation, as Associate Director of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and as Program Officer at the Cleveland Foundation; in government service programs – as President of the Private Industry Council of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County; in policy research – as a Visiting Fellow at the Urban Institute, as President of the Social Policy Research Group; as Vice President of the Manpower Demonstration Research Corp, and as an Associate Social Scientist at the Rand Corporation; and in senior government service – as Special Assistant to the Deputy Undersecretary of Education, and Associate Director at the National Institute of Education.

Dr. Hyman holds three graduate degrees from Stanford University including Masters' Degrees in both Business and Education as well as a Ph.D. in Education. Dr. Hyman also pursued post-doctoral studies in Economics and Econometrics at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
