William Roberts

Bill is the Executive Director of the Maguire Academy of Insurance & Risk Management (RMI) at Bowie State University (BSU), joining the university in 2023. This is BSU first Academy in RMI. In a short period of time Bill has researched, drafted a received approval for a full RMI curriculum and B S Degree Major. BSU students will be able to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, Majoring in RMI. Bill selected an independent Board of Advisors from risk and insurance industry leaders and has presided over several Board Meetings. Bill has submitted and received approval for 3 grants and several donations for the Academy, along with recruiting students, developing events, symposiums, panel discussions and teaching BSU’s first RMI course, and much more.

Prior to joining BSU, in 2016 Bill joined American Water Works Company (AWW) in Camden, NJ as Senior Manager, Head of Risk and Insurance. There he managed a staff of risk & claims professionals strategically placed in the US to manage Property, Auto, Casualty, Workers’ Compensation, Employment & all insurance claims & litigation nationally. As an experienced Risk Manager, Bill also collaborated on AWW’s Risk Management matters also.

Prior to American Water, Bill managed a consulting practice, Risk & Claims Management Consulting (RCMC), as Managing Director. There he provided risk & claims solutions for many public, private, and non-profit organizations. Prior to RCMC, Bill was Assistant Vice President and Director of Corporate Risk Management for Lincoln Financial Group in Radnor, Pennsylvania for over twelve (12) years. Bill procured over 30 insurance programs annually from US, Lloyds of London and Bermudian Insurers. Before joining Lincoln, Bill worked at Philadelphia based Pep Boys for over six years where he managed the risks and claims for Pep Boys’ 650 stores, 25,000 employees and fleet of 2000 vehicles.

Before Pep Boys, Bill spent over a decade in the insurance industry, starting his career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Group of Boston. There he worked in various management positions in claims and risk, in multiple states including three years in Liberty’s Home Office. He was awarded Liberty’s National Employee Recognition award. Following Liberty, Bill worked with CIGNA Reinsurance Company in their Headquarters in Philadelphia, managing Global Reinsurance Treaty accounts.

Bill has lectured at several national and global conferences, including Risk and Insurance Management Society, (RIMS); presented to several Lloyds of London Syndicates and Bermudian Insurers, and many US Insurers, and media on risk management issues.

Bill holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, a Masters in Business Administration, (MBA) from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, as well as an Associate in Risk Management, (ARM) from the Insurance Institute of America.

Bill and his wife Gail have two sons, Ryan a graduate from Johnson & Wales University, and Chase who graduated from Hampton University.
