The Man with a Mic

Kyle Jones

Kyle Jones has fond memories of listening to the radio growing up, which he credits with serving as the inspiration for his professional handle, Kyle on the Mic.

“There was a lady named Angie Ange. They would call her ‘Angie on the mic.’” said Jones. “I was already into entertainment, and it was always an interest that I had. So, my twelfth-grade year I was like, ‘What could I name myself?’ What can I do that can match me and what I am? I used to wake up an hear, ‘It must be Angie on the mic.’ So, I said, ‘It must be Kyle on the mic.’”

And with that, Jones’ entertainment persona was born. Since then, Jones has found his place as an entertainment host working games for the WNBA’s Washinton Mystics and the NBA G-League’s Capital City Go-Go, as well as working a range of high-profile entertainment events which includes the opening of Tyler Perry Studios and BET red carpet events, among others. Jones also applies his skills across his digital platforms, which includes the “The Hype Man Show” on DTLR Radio, as well as hosting interviews with the likes of Michael B. Jordan, Keke Palmer and Senator Elizabeth Warren on YouTube and Instagram. It’s all a natural extension of his love to entertain the masses.

“I first started off as a theater arts major,” said Jones. “I love the stage and doing things like that. I also love having natural conversations with people. The older I got, I saw you could do this as a major. It just naturally happened. I enjoyed being involved on campus. I was doing speeches and different things in front of the camera. I was like, ‘You know what, I think communications is something I want to do. I can be in front of the camera and be authentically me.”

Which is right in line with what Jones learned about how to conduct himself through being Bowie Bold while he matriculated through the communications department pursuing his degree in broadcast journalism.

“Bowie bold means showing up, standing out and being authentically you no matter what the situation is,” said Jones. “Just having the most confidence and being the best person you are and, when you show up, being as bold as you are as well. Bowie bold means showing up boldly, with confidence and standing out.”

But beyond that, Jones also interprets behind being Bowie Bold as having confidence in what he brings to the table and not being scared to compete professionally with others that come from schools with higher name recognition or bigger populations.

“Bowie State gave me the tools to go out there and do it,” said Jones. “Some people think you need to go to these big schools with these big names to have these opportunities. But Bowie showed me it’s good sometimes to be considered the underdog because it’s going to push your grind to let people know we are bold.”

That boldness also fuels his ability to pour himself and his combination of high-energy and positivity into everything he does. While he’s looking to what comes next on his journey, Jones will approach it with the same intention to take his mic and stand out from the crowd.

“It’s in my soul,” said Jones. “Wherever I go I always live by my quote, ‘Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out?’”
