Earth Week
Earth Day 2023 is Saturday, April 22. BSU will celebrate the days surrounding Earth Day with a series of events coordinated by C4, our BSU Student Green Ambassadors, and our partner - Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. See the events schedule below from 2022.
Recap of the Events
Tuesday, April 19 - Nature Walk
We learned a lot from this walk including survival skills, the difference btw swamps and marsh land, the do’s and don’ts of hiking & how to spot poisonous vegetation. We also spotted a bald eagle, saw a large beaver lodge, saw & heard signs of beavers & frogs, witnessed wild yucca and many other things.
Wednesday, April 2 - Movie on the Lawn Night
The campus clean up went well with roughly about 20 students collecting several bags of trash in 3 different zones. We also had ice cream available for all of the volunteers, sponsored by Auxiliary Sevices
The movie on the lawn night also saw about 20 attendees on McKeldin Lawn. Snacks were eventually provided and the videos were educational & informative.
Thursday, April 21 - Arbor Day Tree Planting
The tree planting was a huge success with close to 40 people total-- digging holes, planting trees, watering, staking & fencing the trees, mulching the area, and also those who were picking up remaining trash around the area. Maryland gubernatorial candidate- John King & his campaign staff were a part of the group as well as representatives from Maryland Dept of Natural Resources. The Alliance’s Zack Carnegie, the Maryland Forests Project Coordinator & expert arborist explained the types of trees & demonstrated the proper way to plant. Weather was perfect and attendees had fun while learning.
Friday, April 22 - Peace Park Rededication
The area around Peace Park brought people from all over campus with music from DJ Cash to come sample a Vegetarian soulfood platter (veggie crabcake sliders, Soul Daddy sliders, vegan buffalo wings, old bay French fries or sweet potatoes), socialize and play a few outdoor games (tennis, hula hoop, bean bag toss, jump rope, etc). The event also provided all BSU constituents to provide feedback electronically & via sticky notes on ideas to improve the area to make it more usable and desirable for students.
