BSU Football Round Up

By Michael D. Sykes II

The Bowie State Bulldogs football team wrapped their season up last week with a 31-20 win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings. The Bulldogs end their season on an emphatic three game winning streak after dropping four straight games in the four prior weeks.

The Bulldogs finish their season with a 5-5 record and a 3-4 record in the CIAA overall. The Bulldogs won’t be getting an opportunity to play in the championship game this season. They finished in third place in the CIAA Northern Division.

However, they do have some positive notes to build off of for next season. The Bulldogs had seven players named to the All-CIAA team this season. The players named to the All-CIAA team were running back Keith Brown, offensive lineman Omar Fahnbulleh, defensive back Curtis Pumphrey, tight end Khari Lee, place kicker Mario Diaz-Avilez, offensive lineman Austin Hochman and defensive lineman Anthony McDaniel.

The Bulldogs also had offensive lineman Justin Nestor and linebacker Kevaugn Townsend named to the All-CIAA rookie team. Both players showed promise throughout the season and have been rewarded tremendously for it.

Most of these players will have the opportunity to play next season and use this one as a learning experience. The Bulldogs got their share of licks this year, but there were plenty of games that they were still in late that they could’ve pulled off for wins. They had one of the best running games in the CIAA this season and should continue to build on that with the talent on their offensive line and in their running back corps.

Look for next season for the Bulldogs to be a tremendous one. They have great expectations for themselves and so should we.
