Women in Research

Women in Research

Women in Research is a platform to support female students in computer science as they participate and gain valuable skills in technology research.

Our main objective is to provide a resourceful environment for students to conduct research and engage in projects that solve real-world issues relevant to them, with the goal of eventual publication.

Through our initiative, we hope to diversify the range of research pursuits and increase the number of published works from underrepresented communities. The platform also offers opportunities for students to network and participate in events and activities that boost their confidence in computer science and empower them to succeed in their field of interest.

The Grace Hopper Experience

Grace Hopper conference (GHC) is an annual gathering of women in computer Science designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. 21 members of WICS- 4 graduate mentors and 17 undergraduate students attended the conference for the first time in the fall of 22 with intent to build networks and develop research interests/initiatives. Following the conference 4 students made connections that led to job offers from prominent companies. In addition, each student presented a poster outlining their learnings from the conference during the Bowie State University Super Stem Day.

With the success of the first GHC experience, WICS BSU intends to make the conference part of our annual club field trips. As a part of that we intend to make research go hand in hand with the experience. For the first time, each member came up with a research topic that they gained interest through GHC. This incuded putting members who wanted to seriously continue the research into research clusters as discussed below.

Research Clusters

WICS research clusters were created to bring together students with similar research interests to collaborate on their topics of interest. Our goal is to foster a community where female researchers can freely exchange experiences, knowledge, and expertise, while exploring their chosen research areas with the guidance of mentors and opportunities for visibility and growth.
