Careers in Health Professions (CHP) Program Partnerships

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine

  • Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine partners with Bowie State University to promote BSU CHP applicants to the medical degree program at WMED. BSU students apply to WMed.
  • BSU CHP  students should apply to WMED using the regular AAMC application and follow the process, as listed. BSU CHP students are selected through the regular selection process and must meet all WMED admission requirements.
  • WMED will provide each BSU CHP student who is admitted to the WMED MD program with a tutition scholarship of at least $20,000.00 each year for four years.Scholarships are subject to medical school policies.
  • BSU CHP students who apply to the WMED medical degree programs, but are not offered admission, WMED will automatically consider these students for the WMED Bridge program. This one year post-baccaulaurate program is for medical school applicants who show potential aptitude for medicine but are not, at present, sufficiently competitive for acceptance into the MD degree program.

Howard University, College of Medicine Center of Excellence Scholars Program (COM CoE)

  • HUCOM CoE and BSU agree that both institutions will work cooperatively to recruit and facilitate the entry of Black students into the field of medicine
    by providing technical support and funding to qualitied students who successfully apply to medical school and become eligible to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from any accredited medical school program including Howard University.
  • Permit qualified BSU CHP students to enroll in the HUCOM CoE Program and participate in a wide range of structured programs to enhance the
    student’s academic performance for medical school acceptance. Participating students will receive the following resources:
    (a) Mentorship and coaching advice
    (b) Use of the HUCOM CoE’s Enrichment Curriculum
    (c) Recommendations for health disparity research and clinical experiences
    (d) Stipend for all participants (Undergraduate participants only)
  • Requirements:Minimum GPA for admission to the HUCOM CoE Program is 3.2; If an accepted BSU CHP student enters the first year of the
    HUCOM CoE Program, but does not perform at an acceptable level, the student will have the option to leave the program or collaborate with their coach and the HUCOM CoE external advisory team to get back on track.

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

  • PCOM agrees to admit up to three (3) BSU CHP students per year to its Philadelphia Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Program (“DO Program”) provided said students have successfully completed their undergraduate prerequisites for medical school at Bowie State University and fulfilled the requirements for admission to PCOM as set forth herein.
  • The Affiliated PCOM – Bowie State University CHP curriculum shall consist of a Traditional Academic Program (“4+4 Program”). Each participating student shall have completed all requirements for the baccalaureate degree at Bowie State University, would enter PCOM following the successful completion of his or her senior year (4+4 program) at Bowie State University, and would receive his or her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree upon the successful completion of four years of medical school education at PCOM.
  • Bowie State University will supply PCOM with a list of students who have indicated their intent to apply for enrollment in the Program during their sophomore year in order that PCOM might communicate with them regarding the Program.  Bowie State University will also supply PCOM with an annual list of students who intend to apply to the Program in that academic year no later than October 19th of that year.
  • Applicants will be accepted into the DO Program if they satisfy the eligibility requirements set forth herein and are interviewed and accepted by PCOM’s Faculty Committee on Admissions.  The Faculty Committee on Admissions at PCOM will consider applicants who meet the following criteria:
    • The candidate must be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) at the time of application submission.
    • The candidate must have earned (on the 4.0 grading system) a grade point average of 30 cumulative and science cumulative through the end of junior year for the 4+4 program.
    • The candidate must take the Medical College Admissions Test as early as possible with the fall of the senior year being preferably the last date possible. The candidate must earn a minimum score of 504 composite and at least a 126 on each section of the MCAT.
    • The candidate must also submit an application to PCOM through AACOMAS no later than October 31st of the senior year and submit all remaining application materials for completion no later than November 30th of the senior year.
  • Candidate must demonstrate an understanding and commitment to osteopathic medicine.In the Fall of each year, Bowie State University will notify PCOM of those candidates qualifying for potential acceptance to the DO Program.  An applicant will not be considered for admission or invited for an interview until his/her full application for admission is complete.  The final decision on admission to the DO Program will be made by PCOM’s Faculty Committee on Admissions in its discretion after the candidate has had a formal PCOM interview.  Final decisions will be made no later than June of the school year in which the application is submitted for admission for the term beginning in August.
    • DO Program Details: Baccalaureate Degree/4+4 Program:  Bowie State University shall award a baccalaureate degree upon completion of the undergraduate requirements associated with the selected degree plan in a respective major and provide proof of graduation through the submission of a final undergraduate transcript with the degree conferred.
    • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree:  PCOM shall award the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine to students completing all of PCOM’s requirements as set forth in the PCOM catalog.

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Master of Science in Biomedical (Biomed) Science 

  • PCOM agrees to admit up to three (3) Bowie State University CHP students per year to its Master of Science in Biomedical Science Program (“Biomed”) provided said students have successfully completed their undergraduate prerequisites for graduate school at Bowie State University and fulfilled the requirements for admission to PCOM as set forth herein.
  • PCOM – University curriculum shall consist of one academic alternative, that is, a Traditional Academic Program (“4+2 Program”). Each participating student shall have completed all requirements for the Baccalaureate degree at Bowie State University, would enter PCOM following the successful completion of his or her senior year (4+2 program) at Bowie State University, and would receive his or her Master of Science degree upon the successful completion of two years of graduate school education at PCOM.  
  • Bowie State University will supply PCOM with a list of students who have indicated their intent to apply for enrollment in the Biomed Program during their sophomore year in order that PCOM might communicate with them regarding the Program. University will also supply PCOM with an annual list of students who intend to apply to the Program in that academic year no later than December 1st of that year.
  • The Faculty Committee on Admissions at PCOM will consider applicants who meet the following criteria:
    • The candidate must complete the undergraduate course requirements as listed in PCOM’s catalog;
    • The candidate must have earned (on the 4.0 grading system) a grade point average of 3.00 cumulative and science cumulative through the end of junior year for the 4+2 program.
    •  The candidate must also submit an application to PCOM with all accompanying materials no later than May 15th of the senior year.
    • PCOM application fee will be waived. 

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) Program

  • PCOM agrees to admit up to three (3) Bowie State University CHP students per year to its Doctor of Pharmacy program (“PharmD Program”) provided said students have successfully completed their undergraduate prerequisites for the School of Pharmacy at University and fulfilled the requirements for admission to PCOM as set forth herein.
  • Student will participate in a traditional academic program (“4+4 Program”). Each participating student shall have completed all requirements for the undergraduate degree at University, would enter PCOM following the successful completion of his or her senior year at University, and would receive his or her Doctor of Pharmacy degree upon the successful completion of four years of pharmacy education at PCOM.  
  • Bowie State University will supply PCOM with a list of students who have indicated their intent to apply for enrollment in the Program during their sophomore year in order that PCOM might communicate with them regarding the Program.  University will also supply PCOM with an annual list of students who intend to apply to the Program in that academic year no later than October 19th of that year.
    1. The candidate must complete the undergraduate course requirements as listed in PCOM’s catalog;
    2. The candidate must have earned (on the 4.0 grading system) a grade point average of 3.00 cumulative and science cumulative through the end of junior year for the 4+4 program.
    3. The candidate must also submit an application to PCOM through PharmCAS no later than October 21st of the senior year and submit all accompanying application materials to PCOM no later than November 20th.The Faculty Committee on Admissions at PCOM will consider applicants who meet the following criteria:
