Social Work & Grassroots Organizations: Havana, Cuba

Immerse yourself in the exciting learning experiences Cuba has to offer. You’ll work with Espiral Cuba, a community-based grassroots organization, to get a real feel for life for its residents. This is a unique opportunity to develop awareness around the country’s contemporary issues and knowledge of its compelling history. Analyze contemporary issues and initiatives in the globalization process. Discover the significance of Cuban society in a one-of-a-kind travel experience. Learn about Cuban culture and history as you participate in community service projects.

Travel dates: Spring Break (specific dates TBD)

Transportation: round trip U.S. Charter flight to Havana, Cuba

Cost: Estimated $2500 (final cost will be calculated in December 2016) Estimated cost includes double occupancy in a hotel in Havana. At least one meal per day is provided, and in most cases 2 meals are provided. Airport transport, transportation to all scheduled events and lectures. Cost does not include any of excursions during leisure time.

Program includes:

  • visit and mini lecture at the Headquarters of the Cuban Literacy Campaign
  • lesson on the Afro Cuban religion of Santa Rita
  • visits to an elementary school; tobacco farm; social program for the elderly and the mentally ill
  • a service learning project with a local grassroots organization that encourages young people to become involved in environmental and civic projects in and around Havana
