Meet The Panel

Steve Stephens II
Moderator
University Philanthropy Officer | Higher Education Leader

Steve Stephens II is a higher education and advancement professional with nearly 15 years of experience in student affairs, fundraising, social justice, and program development. A graduate of Langston University and University of Maryland Global Campus, he currently serves as a University Philanthropy Officer at Bowie State University, leading fundraising initiatives across alumni engagement, academics, athletics, and the arts.

He has held leadership roles at Coppin State University and Winston-Salem State University, specializing in student engagement, Greek life, and retention programming—particularly for first-generation and underrepresented students. A public speaker and educator, Stephens also serves on the board of Abilities Network and supports youth development through clinics with the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders. He is a proud husband and father of four.

Deuce Alston is a two-time Bowie State University graduate and entrepreneur who pivoted from academia into building a successful government contracting business after a life-changing setback. Since 2019, he has helped secure over $4 million in federal contracts while also launching a smoothie café and mentoring others in financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

His work centers on wealth-building, strategy, and community impact—helping others navigate pathways to generational success. Deuce’s journey reflects resilience, intentional growth, and a commitment to legacy-building in real time.


Dr. Stephanie V. Overton Stanard (’90, ’93)

Dr. Stephanie V. Overton Stanard is the President and CEO of SOS Human Capital Solutions, LLC, providing leadership in recruitment, workforce development, and organizational strategy across Maryland and Washington, DC. A seasoned executive, she has held senior leadership roles within the U.S. Department of Education, overseeing operations, human resources, policy, and strategic planning at the highest levels.

Her career spans impactful roles across federal agencies including the Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. Postal Service, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. A proud Bowie State University alumna, she holds a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and currently serves as President of the BSU National Alumni Association. A lifelong public servant, she leads across multiple boards and initiatives focused on economic development and community impact.

Erica Johnson, M.A., (’14, ‘23)

Strategic Coordinator | Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, BSU

Erica Johnson is a higher education professional serving as Strategic Coordinator for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Bowie State University. With over eight years of experience, she leads division-wide initiatives, supports student engagement strategies, and enhances the impact of key institutional programs and events.

A proud two-time BSU alumna and former Miss Bowie State University, Erica gained national recognition as an Ebony Magazine “Top 10 Campus Queen.” She continues to pour into students as a mentor, assistant cheerleading coach, and children’s book author focused on youth empowerment. Her work reflects a deep commitment to student success, leadership development, and building a thriving campus community.
