Why an Organizational Communications Master’s Degree?

Develop a foundation of the managerial and analytical techniques you’ll need to navigate the world of corporate communications, public affairs, lobbying and telecommunications theory and policy. You’ll gain working knowledge of how to solve organizational problems, including crisis communications planning. With support from and access to experienced faculty, expect exclusive hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship.

Network with guest lecturing professionals living in nearby Baltimore and Washington, D.C., who work in news, entertainment, sports, broadcasting and public relations. You’ll gain insights from their experiences as you consider national and international perspectives around policymaking and communications solutions.

What Can You Expect?

Develop an expertise that allows you to connect across industries as you engage in brand management and reputation building. Gain skills that encompass marketing and public relations with an emphasis on strong writing and communication skills. Receive expert instruction from professors with national and international as they mentor you through classes and prepare you for the next step in your career.

The organizational communications program is a 12-course degree program, totaling 36 credit hours. There are two options — thesis and non-thesis:

  • Thesis option: Dive into communications theory, publishing your own research and implications to an academic or wider audience. Write, synthesize info and defend your thesis.
  • Non-thesis option: If investigating and analyzing is a better fit, choose our non-thesis research option. You’ll analyze a topic, create your own methodology and take a comprehensive exam.

Take up to 12 credit hours a semester with special eight-week courses offered on a semester-to-semester basis.

Build Your Career Skills on Campus

Access campus resources such as Bowie State’s Bulldog Nation Radio and BSU-TV and work on high-quality media productions of campus projects, sporting and special events, as well as community and educational programs.

Develop an understanding of media production working on the student magazine, FLOW magazine, or hone digital publishing skills at The Spectrum, Bowie State’s student newspaper.

Network with peers by joining the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) or the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

Each semester we have mental health days, where the university will cancel classes for the day so we can de-stress. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to, and BSU has counseling services available for students.
