Our groundbreaking program combines information and communication technology with health science to prepare you for a fast-growing field at the intersection of data, technology, and health care.

You’ll learn to integrate data analysis tools and lab experience to address major industry challenges, such as protecting patient records, streamlining care, and solving persistent IT-related issues.

As AI advances and health needs become more complex, the demand for professionals who understand health care–specific technology continues to grow. This program explores the full range of technologies that support providers and improve patient outcomes, giving you the skills to fix IT issues as they arise and the foresight to anticipate and plan for cyber threats.

Bowie State is located near the intersection of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, allowing you to take advantage of our location to gain experience in the healthcare industry. This includes the health departments in Baltimore and D.C. and award-winning facilities including the Holy Cross Hospital, which is only a 20-minute drive from campus.  

To earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Informatics & Technology, you must complete 120 credit hours and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. The curriculum includes 46 credits of general education courses and 74 credits of core competency courses. In this program, you will:

  • Analyze public health data utilizing data management and analytic tools.  
  • Use strategies to ensure confidentiality, security and integrity of health data.  
  • Integrate AI, machine learning, and big data analytics into public health practices. 
  • Communicate effectively through reports, technical documents and presentations. 

What Can I Do With Public Health Informatics?

Your Bachelor of Science in Public Health Informatics & Technology prepares you to become an integral part of the health care delivery system and secure positions in various settings. You will use health technologies including data management, analytics software, health science knowledge and best practices to enhance community and public health.

Public Health Informatics and Technology teaches you about data collection and healthcare management. PHIT students can go on to successful roles in the CDC and local health departments or pivot into medical records at hospitals. Some common careers include:
