Bike Share Program Promotes Green Transportation

In promoting a green lifestyle, Bowie State University will launch a comprehensive bike share program Thursday, providing free access to the bikes and equipment for the campus community. The launch event, taking place at the Student Center lawn, will feature a caravan of cyclists taking off for a ride around the campus.


Female cyclist rides on the campusThe BSU Bike Share Program offers free use of bikes for students, faculty and staff to get around campus sustainably, affordably and quickly. The program is the latest sustainability initiative of the C4 (Climate Commitment Coordinating Committee), which encourages sustainability awareness as a way of life for the campus community.

Cyclists can check out bikes from the Student Center, Game Room and reserve them for any length of time from an hour to two consecutive days. Equipped with a GPS tracking device, bikes cannot be used outside of the BSU campus perimeter, with the exception of the Jericho Park bike trail. The program will begin with 10 Sun Cruz cruisers, along with helmets and bike locks for storage on campus bike racks.

Bikes can be reserved based on availability at the time of the request during these operating hours:

  • Fall Semester:
    Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
    Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Bikes may not be available after November 15 (weather dependent)
  • Spring Semester:
    Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
    Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Bikes may not be available before March 15 (weather dependent)
  • Summer: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
