A Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology prepares you to become a psychologist and/or counselor in a mental health organization or university. The program emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships that require considerable commitment on behalf of you as a student and professional. You will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to become a future clinician, researcher, or educator. At Bowie State University, we will help you develop the foundational knowledge to pursue doctoral studies or serve as a masters-level professional in your field.

Why a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology?

Your Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree will prepare you to use and interpret an Adlerian Lifestyle Assessment, which is a holistic assessment for case conceptualization and treatment plans. You will develop the ability to use and interpret various interest inventories, aptitude tests and other measures related to education and career choices.

You will develop the foundation to apply a diverse and culturally responsive framework to all forms of practice (i.e., consultation, counseling, assessment, intervention design and implementation, professional training, etc.) and an understanding of major theoretical counseling approaches.

The program is arranged into five levels, and you must fulfill each requirement to be eligible for graduation.  

Year One 

Level One 
  • PSYC 502 Principles and Philosophy of Counseling
  • EDUC 507 Advanced Human Growth and Development
  • PSYC 633 Multicultural Counseling
Level Two
  • PSYC 608 Career Counseling and Development
  • PSYC 734 Adlerian Theory and Other Theories
  • PSYC 780 Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling
  • EDUC 706 Introduction to Research

Year Two 

Level Three 
  • PSYC 614 Appraisal, Assessment, and Evaluation
  • PSYC 733 Group Counseling
  • PSYC 732 Family Counseling
Level Four
  • PSYC 744 Psychodynamics of Psychopathology
  • COUN 762 Drug and Alcohol Counseling
  • PSYC 737 Lifestyle Assessment

PSYC 799 CPCE: After completing levels one, two, and three, you will be eligible for PSYC 799 CPCE, which is a comprehensive exam. You must pass this exam before registering for any level five series.  

Year Three 

Level Five (Must complete PSYC 799 CPCE) 
  • PSYC 836 Practicum in Counseling Psychology (250hrs)
  • PSYC 858 Internship in Counseling Psychology (450hrs)
  • PSYC 861 Seminar in Counseling Psychology

Career Outlooks

Students who complete their Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology typically become psychologists, clinicians, researchers, educators or counselors in a mental health organization or university. Once you complete the program, you can enter a similar field or establish your own path.
