(BOWIE, Md.) – In the past week, Bowie State University has relieved the debt for nearly 1,400 students. To support those students and others who have been admitted after the Aug.1 deadline to request COVID-19 exemption, the university is making accommodations to provide remote instruction to unvaccinated students through Sept. 30. The original deadline for full vaccination was Aug. 30.

Students will transition to in-person classes and have full access to on-campus resources and on campus housing only after they are fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated students are not permitted on campus– even during the extension period. For recently admitted students, those receiving debt relief and partially vaccinated students, the extended deadline will allow time for them to complete the vaccination process.

The university is incorporating the use of zoom and other hi-flex video technology to enable in-person and remote teaching of additional class sections. Some sections will be fully online. This will help as many students as possible to remain enrolled.

The vaccination requirement for all students, faculty and staff returning for the fall semester was widely communicated beginning on April 23, 2021. For those who have not begun the vaccination process, the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine offers the fastest option to full compliance, two weeks after the shot. Both the Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines are readily available through the campus Wellness Center. Appointments can be scheduled through the Wellness Patient Portal.

.Maintaining a highly vaccinated campus population, except for a few exempt individuals, is a critical requirement to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the campus community. The vaccines have proven to be effective in preventing serious illness and death from the virus. Students are encouraged to protect themselves and the campus community by completing their vaccination as quickly as possible to stay on track to earning their degrees.
